| Abstract | O Distrito Florestal Sustentável (DFS) da BR-163 no Pará foi criado com o objetivo de promover desenvolvimento local integrado com atividades baseadas em exploração florestal. A região tem cerca de 190.000 km2 e compreende os municípios de Altamira, Aveiro, Belterra, Itaituba, Jacareacanga, Novo Progresso, Placas, Rurópolis, Santarém, e Trairão. Este trabalho discute as relações entre as dinâmicas demográficas e econômicas e as alterações observadas no uso e cobertura da terra para os municípios do DFS da BR-163 entre 1991 e 2007, a partir da interpretação dos dados disponíveis na base do IBGE, de evolução populacional (Censos Demográficos e contagem de 2007), os dados preliminares do Censo Agropecuário de 2006 e a estrutura econômica dos municípios (PIB municipal de 2005). Diferentes padrões foram encontrados entre os municípios do DFS da BR-163 , alguns mantiveram a tendência de crescimento populacional estimada para 2007, outros sofreram inversão na tendência de crescimento, caracterizando-se respectivamente, como centros atratores ou dispersores de população com diferentes estratégias econômicas e demográficas associadas ao uso da terra. A pluralidade de situações descritas neste artigo ressalta a necessidade de estudos específicos para as diferentes porções do território do DFS da BR-163, para que o objetivo de promover formas de exploração florestal seja alcançado, com maior grau de sustentabilidade e responsabilidade em relação aos recursos ambientais. ABSTRACT: The Sustainable Forest District (DFS) along the BR-163 road in state of Para, Brazil, was created to promote integrated local development based on activities of forest exploration. The region has approximately 190,000 km2, and comprises the municipalities of Altamira, Aveiro, Belterra, Itaituba, Jacareacanga, Novo Progresso, Placas, Rurópolis, Santarém, and Trairão. This paper analyses the relationships between demographical and economic dynamics and the land use cover changes from 1991 to 2007 in municipalities of the BR-163 DFS. We interpreted available IBGE data referred to population evolution (Demographic Censuses and 2007 Population Count), preliminary data of 2006 Agriculture Census, and municipal economic structure (2005 GDP of Municipalities). Different patterns were verified among BR-163 DFS: some municipalities followed the IBGE population estimative for 2007, and others presented an inversion in the growing tendency, indicating centres of population attraction and dispersion, respectively. Besides that, different economic and demographic profiles were verified in association to different land use preferences. The plurality of situations described for municipalities in this work evidenced the heterogeneity of BR-163 DFS territory. Specific studies, at finer scales, also considering field information, has to be performed to address the DFS policy objectives of promoting forest exploration with sustainability and environmental responsibility. |
